Barkala Flats are situated in a residential area of Edenhope a short distance from the CBD. The flats are also within walking distance of Grampians Health, the Medical Clinic and the Elsie Bennett Day Centre.

Barkala Flats comprise of 19 independent living units, owned and managed by Grampians Health Edenhope.


All flats are suitable for individual living and comprise of a lounge with curtained bedroom area, kitchen and bathroom with laundry facilities within the closed-in rear porch area. The flats are suitable for people with disabilities and any modifications required can be made by the skilled hospital maintenance team. Tenants are required to supply their own furniture and utensils.

Each flat has its own front garden with some of the flats having under cover areas for parking vehicles.

At the rear of the flats is a large communal garden area. This area has recently been upgraded with assistance from the Edenhope Branch of the Lions Club and primary school students from St Malachy’s. The Barkala Flat Gardens are maintained by the hospital maintenance staff.


Additional services are available to Barkala Flat Residents whom meet the eligibility criteria by contacting the relevant organisations.

Barkala Flats History

EDMH commenced management of the Barkala Flats in 2001. Prior to that they were managed by a community group that had built the units.

Through the Barkala Flats, many older and less physically abled community members have been able to find safe, affordable housing within Edenhope, staying in the community that they know so well.


Barkala Flats Charter

To provide affordable housing within Edenhope for the aged, disabled and otherwise disadvantaged, thereby assisting people to remain in Edenhope and live independently, while participating in community life and activities.


Who can rent a Barkala Flat?

People eligible to live in Barkala Flats are those who are aged and/or disabled or otherwise disadvantaged.

Preference will be given to people who have lived in the Edenhope area.

Although receiving a social security benefit is not a requirement to live in Barkala Flats, preference

will be given to those people who are receiving Government benefits.


How do I apply?

Written applications must be made using a Barkala Flats application form, this is available on our website www.edmh.org.au or by contacting the hospital  administration office on 03 5585 9800.  Written application forms are available here or from the hospital administration office.

Edenhope is home to a number of sporting and recreational clubs including an 18 hole golf course, lawn bowling, football, netball, tennis, the Lions Club and RSL. A Senior Citizens organisation and meeting place is located in Langford Street and a well-attended adult activity centre is located at the Elsie Bennett Community Centre adjacent to the hospital which offers exercise and educational programs to the community.

Edenhope is situated close to the South Australian Border, only a 30 minute drive to Naracoorte, an hour to historical Penola or an hour to Horsham.
