Urgent Care

Urgent Care Centre

The Urgent Care department of the Grampians Health Edenhope is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It can be accessed through the front door until 5.00pm. After 5.00pm the Hospital is locked.

Entry after 5.00pm is by an emergency buzzer at the front door.

The Urgent Care Centre is staffed by trained Nurses from the hospital 24 hours a day.

People presenting to the Urgent Care Department are triaged by a registered nurse who will determine your medical needs. The nurse will contact the doctor if deemed necessary.

All levels of urgent care are given in the department. Once initial care and stabilisation has been attended then decisions are made as to the most appropriate place for patients to receive ongoing care.  If required transfers to other specialised hospitals are then arranged.

In the event that patients do not require urgent or emergency nursing or medical assistance, an appointment should be arranged with a general practitioner during business hours at the
Rural Doctors Medical Clinic on Lake Street, or their local GP.

Please note that Urgent Care should only be utilised for emergencies, it is not an alternative to making an appointment with your GP.

It is advisable and only if possible to notify the Hospital on
(03) 5585 9800 if you are coming in or bringing a patient in to Urgent Care.

If the condition is serious please call 000 for an ambulance.

If you are concerned about a health issue outside business hours contact the Nurse on Call helpline 1300 606 024 which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is a free and confidential phone service which provides users with health advice from a registered nurse.

Urgent Care Services

Urgent Care Services (UCS) are located in small rural communities where higher levels of trauma care are not available.

UCS provides initial resuscitation and a limited stabilisation capacity prior to early transfer to an Regional Trauma Service (the closest to Edenhope being Horsham) or Metro Trauma Service (the closest MTS to Edenhope is located in Melbourne).

Will I have to wait long for treatment?

  • No. Waiting times at our hospital are substantially less than at city hospitals.
  • X-rays are conducted in the Radiology room. These can be by appointment only with our visiting radiographer, who comes from Hamilton on Tueday and Friday morning.
  • We have some trained staff who may be able to attend to some emergency X-rays.
  • A vast range of conditions are treated in our department, from small grazes and burns to major motor vehicle accidents or sore throats through to pneumonia.
  • All patients are assessed on arrival, and priority and urgency of care needs are identified.

" Recently my son fell off his motorbike and we brought him into Urgent care for attention.

From the moment I phoned to say we were coming, nothing was a problem and they went out of their way to make sure my son was comfortable and that he was cared for. They were also dealing with multiple urgent care admissions at the time.

We were able to be dealt with here without having to travel and we didn’t spend any time waiting around.  I feel lucky that we have this service and would like to thank the team for their kindness and help."
