Harmony Week - Staff Profile

Joseph Bermudo - Director of Nursing.

Describe your background

I was born in the Philippines and migrated to New Zealand in 2010.  I’ve acquired my New Zealand citizenship in 2017.

I’ve migrated to Australia in 2018 and obtained my permanent resident visa in 2019.

How long have you been working at EDMH?

I started working as the Director of Nursing for GH-Edenhope on 09/07/2018.

I know the specific date because it was 2 days after my birthday

What does diversity mean to you?

Diversity for me is recognizing the different aspects of a person. This may include their cultural upbringing, their beliefs and practices.

Diversity for me means acceptance and not just tolerance. To say that diversity is accepted and not tolerated is the key to recognizing all faces of race, sexual orientation and identity.

What would you like other people to know about your heritage?

Growing up in the Philippines, it has always been embedded in my core to value family. I grew up with 6 other siblings and for us family is very important.

I have 11 nieces and nephews, plus the dogs and they mean the world to me. Also, FOOD is important in everything we do.

This year’s theme is ‘everyone belongs’, what does that mean to you?

For me it means that every person matters. That respect and acceptance are equivocally given to each and every one in the organisation and the wider.
