Jayee family sidestep spotlight for solitude in Edenhope

Satnam and Nishu Jayee are used to life in the fast lane.

Satnam starred in Bollywood movies, was personal trainer to some of the most famous actors in India and took out the ‘Mr India’ title for his bodybuilding success. Their son, Garvit (14), was trained by a famous boxer and continues to share videos with thousands of YouTube followers.

Nishu, who grew up with six siblings in India, is well-accustomed to busyness and noise. Satnam, too, has six brothers and a sister.

Moving to Melbourne, six years ago, was already a shock for the family-of-four, including their now-7-year-old Geetakshi.

But rolling into Edenhope of a Sunday evening, earlier this year, was simply surreal.

“When we came here, it felt very strange, the street was completely empty,” Nishu said. “It was very quiet, but we are getting used to it.”

The peace and safety of Australia was what attracted the Jayee family to Melbourne in 2019.

“It is a better place for study and a better future for our children here,” Nishu said. “I do miss the food, and I miss my parents, but otherwise we are very happy here.”

Nishu is an Enrolled Nurse at Grampians Health Edenhope and Satnam has started as a Healthcare Worker.

Although Nishu felt supported by in-laws in Melbourne, she found it difficult to form relationships with colleagues.

“Everyone had already made groups in Melbourne but here it is not like that, everyone talks to everyone,” she said. “It is very supportive and everyone is asking to help; that’s why I like it so much.”

For Satnam, migrating to Australia meant abandoning stardom and a successful career in personal training.

“I want to give all my time to my family and do what is good for them,” he said.

The move has been a huge adjustment for the children, but football and netball brought a much-needed outlet.

“We are liking the quiet, but the kids are taking some time,” Satnam said. “It is good for them here; they will find that out soon.”
