Master of Mental Health First Aid

Mal the Master!

Grampians Health Rural Outreach Worker Mal Coutts has been awarded with Master status by Mental Health First Aid Australia, this has been achieved for delivering more than 30 accredited Mental Health First Aid courses.

The Mental Health First Aid program offers accessible mental health training courses to businesses, councils and sporting groups across the region. Mal has been delivering Mental Health first aid training since 2016.

“Having mental health first aid skills means that you can assist someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis and make a real difference to your community,” said Mal.

"We try in the courses to cover anxiety, depression, psychosis, substance abuse and eating disorders.  This helps people understand the areas of mental health and gives them a handle in it.  This gives people the confidence to talk to people and know the right questions to ask."

It has been a big few weeks for Mal, on top of his recent Master status, Mal was delighted to have received a nomination in the Victorian Rural Health Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Rural Outreach Provision Award!
