Polymath embarks on nursing career in Edenhope

Nausheen Hashmi is walking proof that one’s size is no indicator of one’s impact.

The Enrolled Nurse has completed two Master’s degrees, in International Business and Hospital Management, and is considering a third, in Advanced Clinical Nursing or Anesthesia.

Nausheen, her husband and their two daughters (8 and 14 years old) have moved to Edenhope after three years in Melbourne.

She balances parenting and nursing, at Lakeside Living care facility, while contributing to the family business in Dubai.

“We sell ready-made garments in four shops across Dubai,” she said. “My father has been running that family business for 65 years.

“I look after all the sales and accounting and keep an eye on everything from here.”

Nausheen has travelled extensively – born in India, but raised in Dubai, she lived and worked in London for seven years, before returning to Dubai, then moving to Melbourne in 2022.

“I worked in the construction sector, for a multinational manufacturing company, managing a corporate showroom,” she said.

“Then I worked for a London university, promoting courses and bringing students from Europe in.

“I change everything all the time; suddenly I’m in Edenhope!”

Although she had knowledge and experience with hospital management, Nausheen was driven to work directly with patients.

“I worked as a community support worker in Melbourne, helping people with daily living, shopping and medical appointments,” she said.

“I’m very good with older people and enjoy listening to their stories and experiences. I think that caring should come from the inside; you can’t act that out.”

Nausheen recently abstained from eating or drinking during daylight hours, during the Muslim holy month ‘Ramadan’. She and her daughters wear hijabs, to cover their hair, as a symbol of modesty and faith.

“I am maybe the first Muslim in Edenhope?” she laughed.

“I believe in all the religions and I respect everyone. Those are my beliefs – that I respect others, help others and care for others.”

Nausheen loves to chat with new people and finds joy in the kitchen.

She has promised to attend the local parkrun and intends to introduce her daughters to the Edenhope-Apsley netball club.

But what excites her most about her family’s tree-change is the possibility of a garden.

“I want to learn gardening, but I’ve never had that opportunity,” she said.

“Wherever I’ve been living, it’s been a busy and crowded place. This is the quiet and relaxing place to do it.”
