'Pirate Day' on May 16: A fun event for an emotional cause
Most of us have been touched by the cruelty of cancer, but few more so than Marg Warren.
Marg lost her mother, husband and sister to cancer and is now supporting her younger sister through brain cancer.
The helplessness of watching her loved ones struggle has driven Marg to plan an event, to raise money for childhood brain cancer research.
Grampians Health Edenhope staff will dress up and purchase afternoon tea on, on May 16, to support the 'Pirate Day' fundraising event.
Marg and a group of golfing friends are in preparation mode, and hope to be overwhelmed by orders for slices and savoury treats.
Marg, who is a Meaningful Life partner at Lakeside Living care facility, has her pirate outfit organised and activities planned for residents.
Among her plans is a unique game of hangman, where incorrect letter guesses will see ducks 'walk the plank'!
“The residents won’t know it’s a fundraiser, they will just enjoy some fun activities and dressing up on the day,” she said.
“It’s a fun event but it’s a very personal and emotional reason that I’m doing it. I’ve lost so many people and just felt I had to something, even if it’s small.”
Pirate’s Day popped up on Marg’s Facebook page, after she was researching her sister’s brain cancer diagnosis.
“I just thought, there must have been a reason this came up on my feed,” she said.
“It’s been really tough and I just needed to do this. I needed to do something.”
While afternoon tea is reserved for staff members, community members can make donations to Marg's event via https://pirateday.com.au/o/oldies?utm_source=qrcode
